Jamie Cox Qualifies #1 for Great Canadian 200 - Brings Home Top-5
The RCR Racing Team, and their driver Jamie Cox, of Dorchester, kicked off the Canada Day holiday weekend at Delaware Speedway on Friday in their CANUSA / Total Lubricants / Stubbs Communications / London City Chrysler Dodge Charger. The Maple City Tire 100 would feature a pair of 50-lap features for the FT Garage NASCAR Late Models, and serve as the final tune up at Delaware before the 2nd Annual APC Summer Showdown featuring NASCAR stars Kyle and Kurt Busch on Wednesday, July 13th.
Time trials kicked off the night, and Jamie was able to lay down a lap of 19.387 seconds against the clock. This was less than 1/10th of a second behind the fast qualifier Steve Matthews, and good enough for fifth. Cox spoke about his run, “I thought I had a decent run, but I couldn’t quite get back to the gas as soon as I wanted to.”
The top-six were inverted before the first 50-lap feature, putting the white #22 on the outside of the front row for the green, with Jon Urlin beside him. Cox was able to get a jump when the green silk flew and darted to the head of the pack. Urlin was passed by D.J. Kennington, who then closed on Cox. Jamie held the defending NASCAR Canadian Tire Series champion behind him until lap 14, and explained, “I saw him coming, and I might have started looking in my mirror a bit too much. I made a mistake and that was all it took.”
Kennington took the lead, as Jamie fell to second, but a few laps later he was moved to the high side by Jon Urlin and trapped in the outside groove. With a tight pack behind him he didn’t get back into line until he had fallen to eighth. As soon as he was able to get to the bottom he started charging back towards the front, picking off one car at a time, and finally cracking the top-five on lap 37. He then started working Matt Pritiko, and nosed ahead of him once, but winding up fifth. “It surprised me a bit that we were able to get out front off the start, and the car still isn’t where we need it to be. We’ll put a new right rear on it and make some adjustments for the second 50-lapper.”
Kennington led the rest of the way, with Urlin finishing second and Mark Watson third.
The field started ‘straight up’ for the second half of the twin bill putting Cox on the inside of row three. He fell back to fifth early in the race, and then started to battle with Watson, eventually losing the position.
Through the rest of the event, Jamie battled with Matthews, Mat Box, and Watson again as he rallied back to fourth, but well under yellow on lap 48 the car started to slow, as a fuel problem slowed the Charger. The crew would attended to the car, and were able to get it fired again as Cox rejoined the field in ninth, and finished tenth.
Cox talked about the second 50, “The new right rear changed the stagger on the car and it helped it. I felt that our car worked better in that race. I had a great battle with Watson for a number of laps, and that was a lot of fun. I’m happy with the way we ran, but not the results in the second feature.”
Kennington led wire-to-wire for his second win of the night and the overall title while Urlin held off Gresel for second. Watson wound up fourth, while Gord Shephard made a late charge to crack the top-five.
1st 50-lap feature – 1. Kenninton, 2. Urlin, 3. Watson, 4. Pritiko, 5. Jamie Cox.
2nd 50-lap feature - 1. Kennington, 2. Urlin, 3. Gresel, 4. Watson, 5. Shephard, 10. Jamie Cox.
The weekend continued on Saturday night at Flamboro Speedway for the second leg of the Grisdale Triple Crown. When it came time for heat race competition, Cox was able to work his way forward to a solid second-place finish.
After a solid result in his second heat race, Cox readied for the feature, in which he would roll off sixth. “We were able to stay near the front of the pack, and were up to fourth, but unlike Delaware all the restarts there are double file. I tried to make it work on the outside and we were in contention for a top-five at the end.”
Cox would battle with two Flamboro legends and Delaware semi-regulars David and Gary Elliott in the closing laps, and wound up with a sixth-place finish, “It was a lot more fun this time, because last time we only got in two heats and nine laps of the feature. I haven’t been here too many times in the past, and it’s tough with guys who have raced here for years. The aprons aren’t painted, so it’s hard to tell where it’s flat and where there is banking, and guys that race here every week know how to hit the marks.”
Watson and David Elliott would wreck fighting for the lead, turning it over to point leader Shane Chenoweth who held on to win the feature. Paul Howse and Jason Shaw joined the winner on the podium, with Gary Elliott finishing fourth, and David coming back through to fifth.
1. Chenoweth, 2. Howse, 3. Shaw, 4. G. Elliott, 5. D. Elliott, 6. Jamie Cox.
The next week will be busy for the RCR Racing Team as they travel to Sunset Speedway on Sunday, July 10th for a Late Model Invitational, before returning to Delaware July 13th for the APC Summer Showdown featuring Kyle and Kurt Busch.
Cox is looking forward to the opportunity to compete with the NASCAR stars, “It will be really cool to race with those guys. We are also supplying the car for Kurt Busch, so we want to make sure that we give him a good car as well. It’s one of the biggest events of the year for us, and we want to have a good showing in front of our sponsors.”
